Rambling thoughts from a Cystic Patient – Part II

From the desk of Mama Piggy:

“You look miserable!”, quipped my gynae as she visited me in the ward the morning after.

I like her, this straight-talking, no-nonsense doctor. Ribbing me for not looking like a million dollars 12 hours after stitching me up!

“Nausea,” I whimpered. Cold sweat glistened on my forehead.

Seeing that my IV needle had been taken out (it was bothering me somewhat with intermittent pain), the doc ordered for a “suppository”. A WHAT?!?

Before I knew it, the nurse came to me with a big white capsule and ordered me to turn over.

“What THE …?!?!?”

Yes, she shoved it up where the sun doesn’t shine.

Some 10 minutes later, I barfed and felt better.

But the effect didn’t last very long.

In fact, I was hit by waves of nausea and giddiness every hour.

Given a choice, I think I would gladly choose pain over nausea.

I had felt fine when I was wheeled out of the OT the night before. The anaesthesia was beginning to wear off, and I could feel some pain in my lower abdomen.

But it got progressively worse that I had to ask for a shot.

Being allergic to a certain family of painkillers, I was given morphine. And while it did zap the pain, it made me woozy.

I was given a jab for nausea at 1 am. But by 2 am, I was in an awful and clammy state. I buzzed the nurse for another jab.

“No, cannot! That one is only once in every 6 hours! I’ll prop you up, try and take deep breaths, you will feel better,” the staff nurse clucked. Great. INHALE. EXHALE.

For the rest of the morning, I broke out in cold sweat at the top of every hour. Deep breaths!

The kitties love the fruit baskets that Mama Piggy received.

A strange side effect of the operation was shoulder pain. Must ask the Doc why when I go back to remove the stitches.

When I got home on Tuesday afternoon, I basically shuffled around the house like the Hunchback of Notre Dame. The kitties stared at me, wide-eyed -_-

By late evening, I was less groggy, and could sit with the cats. Save for frisky Milo, I swear that Kootoo and Muffin could sense that I was unwell (maybe I appear like a maimed animal to them) and were extra sweet to me. Not ingrates afterall :)

You should be glad Milo treated you as everyday normal while Kootoo and Muffin were suspicious of the Hunchback of Notredame...

Oh good Lord. I'm too busy to check your blog for a couple of days and when I return HAILSTORM APOCALYPSE JUDGEMENT DAY ROBINSONS THE SALE WORTH WAITING FOR.

Seriously, reading this was a huge surprise. I'm sorry to hear your post-surgery experience wasn't good, and hope you get well soon.

Shoulder-pain can be "referred pain" due to perhaps some trickling of blood from the surgical site onto the diaphram. Call your surgeon if the pain persists.

Ewww ... I googled "post surgery shoulder pain" and gathered that it could be due to the residue CO2 gas used in the operation that is trapped under the diaphragm, see shoulder pain

oh dear... hope you get well real soon...

my post-surgery was a breeze.. maybe i was expecting a lot of pain? i dunno...

i just know i was on drip and kept wanting to pee... and that was terrible, cos i had to use a BED PAN! Yikes!

and the nurses kept waking me up... while the alarm on the IV or some machine kept beeping, LOUDLY.

Dear Mama Porky,
Looks like we two are heads of the Scaredy Cats Post-Surgery Support group founders by decree. After my second op, I also was plagued with nausea - spinning head and hurl-a-sec.

Was ding-donging between one and the other all way from 5pm till 10pm then nurse give a jab... even then, the symptoms only sometime past 3am. Then I rediscovered my tumtum... it was growling, and I had to wait til 8am for succour. Then i realised I couldn't sleep. So I lied there listening to my tummy churn and whine. Talk about long nights.

That's one experience I don't care to repeat. :P

Take care, and I bet Kootoo's a conveniently great self-heating heat-pad!

Guess our bodies react differently to anaesthesia and surgery huh?

KSN, I think it's an age issue too, you were probably much younger than me when you went for your op, so your body coped better. Heh. I.Cannot.Pee.In.The.Bed.Pan. The nurse made me sit on it, but while I did have the urge to wee wee, it just wouldn't come out! I had to drag my IV drip machine to the toilet to do it. The nurse kept the tap running for good measure ;P

Concur with you Calsifer, all surgical procedures with GA traumatise the body to some extent. Health is wealth indeed, may one and all be healthy and free from sufferings ...
